Conviction (2010)

Based on the true story of a working mother who became a lawyer to free her wrongfully imprisoned brother, Conviction plays upon the heartstrings with both its astonishing story and the exceptional performances from Hilary Swank and Sam Rockwell.  Yet while the acting may be sublime, the characters themselves develop with different authenticity during their current adulthood and the flashbacks to their youth.  The inseparable sibling bond clearly seen in the latter doesn’t translate to the former and this disruption in connection will likely confuse audiences as much as the ambiguity in the brother’s innocence.  Still, as an inspirational drama, its methods are effective at wrenching emotion from the audience and as the story unfolds the rousing underdog plight steps to the forefront to mask any missteps in presentation until after the triumphant finale.
When Kenny Waters (Sam Rockwell) is convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison, his devoted sister Betty Anne (Hilary Swank) refuses to give up hope.  Sacrificing everything to pursue his freedom, she enrolls in Roger Williams University and eventually earns a law degree to become Kenny’s lawyer.  With the aid of her best friend Abra (Minnie Driver) and renowned attorney Barry Scheck (Peter Gallagher) of the Innocence Project, which works to exonerate the wrongfully accused, Betty Anne begins an exhaustive fight to prove Kenny’s innocence.
Conviction has the right idea - by adapting a powerful true story and using superb, A-list actors, it will be difficult for audiences to avoid becoming involved and moved. Many moments are tinged with emotion, heartbreak and stirring injustice, complimented by soft piano music and teary eyes, emphasized by flashbacks within flashbacks and an intricate timeline, bouncing between the present, childhood, the crime scene, the original arrest, the re-arrest and the courtroom. It’s all incredibly effective, even if the plot unfolds like a two-hour episode of Law and Order.

Through the use of particularly unusual circumstances, Conviction plays out its double entendre title, brilliantly bringing to life a situation involving DNA testing exoneration and the incredibly complex details of perjury, questionable authorities, and officials reluctant to admit error. When it’s not merely visualizing facts of the case, it focuses on perseverance, sibling bonds, choosing duty over family and hopelessness. Conviction never becomes a courtroom drama, instead steering toward unleashing emotions through legal barriers. “I’m sorry you’ve wasted your life on this,” coldly remarks Nancy Taylor, stating a thought many might feel about Betty Anne, who believes she’s losing her family to an unending devotion toward the cause. It’s also odd that Kenny isn’t made to appear completely innocent – the evidence against him is certainly convincing, and he never bothers to reiterate his guiltlessness to his sister or the audience. Fortunately, Rockwell displays an impressive transformation as Kenny and Swank is outstanding in a role that will likely garner Academy Award attention.

My Name is Khan (2010)

After the tragedy of 9 / 11, where the United States government immediately accused the existence of the Muslim extremist group al-Qaeda was behind the incident, no doubt making a shift in perspective against any Muslims who were there. For some of those who have a narrow perspective, Muslims around they would be seen as part of a terrorism threat as well.

Basic story is what is used by Karan Johar on the newest movie, My Name is Khan. In addition to the above mentioned problems, the film became the fourth film ever directed by Johar, also raised the question of dispute between the Muslims and the Hindus in Pakistan. Even so, still, just like in the movies Karan Johar earlier, the theme of the true meaning of the power of love who became the main foundation of My Name is Khan.

My Name is Khan is also re-unite Johar came back with one of the most ideal partner in the film industry Bollywood, Shahrukh Khan and Kajol. This is their first meeting time in nine years after Johar Khushi Kabhie Kabhie Gham released a success when released in 2001 ago.

The film itself tells about the life story of Rizwan Khan (Tanay Chheda), an Indian Muslim people with Asperger's syndrome - a syndrome where the patient has autism and hard to interact with their environment - which is small since life is always tinged with sorrow. Only the the mother (Zarina Wahab), which became the only person who can understand how Rizwan.

After the death of the mother, Rizwan (adult, played by Shahrukh Khan) moved to the United States to follow his brother, Zakir (Jimmy Sherrgil), who had first lived there for decades. This is where the adventure begins Rizwan life. He met with Mandira (Kajol), a Hindu woman working in a salon, and slowly began to fall in love with him. Because of this religious differences - which is also based on the conflict between Hindus and Muslims in India - the younger brother strongly opposed their relationship. Even so, Rizwan still decided to marry Mandira, with all the differences between them, including religion. Together Sameer (Yuvaan Makaar), Mandira child from a previous marriage, three of them moved to Los Angeles and start a new life there.

Although it does not change his faith, Mandira and Sam (Sameer nickname) does not mind to change their last name became Khan, a surname synonymous with Islam in India. However, the tragedy of 9 / 11 that occur in the future will change the lives of citizens of the United States, including life Rizwan, Mandira and Sam. On the basis of hatred against Muslims, Sam became the victims of persecution group of children in school. Sam eventually died. In chaotic circumstances, exactly Mandira Rizwan blame for the death of Sam. He blamed the decision to marry a Muslim and changed his last name and Sam, so Sam eventually become victims. In his anger, Mandira expel Rizwan and asked him to meet with President of the United States and told him that a Khan was not a terrorist.

Of course, because he suffered Asperger's syndrome, Rizwan digest in full sentences. He finally left Mandira and start adventuring to find a way to meet the President of the United States and told him that he was not a terrorist as long as most Americans think the mainstream Muslims.

As stated previously, although the religious side as a basic part of the script the story, but still, My Name is Khan is still a part of Johar film: the film that tells of love, the power of love and ... well ... apapaun related to the theme of the power of love will be able to change everything. Since the beginning, My Name is Khan's running so perfect as a movie drama. Johar capable of providing a layer of lighter and more grounded in the theme of religious conflict, which sounded heavy and sensitive, so that My Names Khan is able to digest easily.

But unfortunately, the power of this film script that has successfully maintained since the early both with Johar, diminishing its quality when towards the end of the story. The film, at first it seemed very down to earth, suddenly turned into a movie with a touch of drama that is too hyperbolic and slightly irrational. Not meant to say that Bollywood films are often stuck with the stereotype of the hyperbolic story, but half of the duration of the film is running as a humanist film, where characters are ordinary human Rizwan and My Name is Khan felt as a play that is very, very good quality high. Minutes where Rizwan turned into a 'no ordinary' and 'what he was doing seemed to really' make My Name is Khan fell back to the category of a Bollywood movie stereotypes. This makes the character of Rizwan who initially close to the audience, becoming increasingly away and away until the end of the story.

No doubt, half the strength of the film is fully held by the collaboration of the duo's warm Shahrukh Khan and Kajol. And you have to admit, when the couple was in adeagn movie, My Name is Khan's exquisite quality. Chemistry that has been arranged between Khan and Kajol since tens of years ago, was able to be revived by them. Consider just how the scene when Rizwan say 'Marry me' against Mandira very funny at the same time romantic. Warm chemistry between the two others managed to make a few funny scenes-nan-typical romantic Bollywood film to be very impressive in this film. This also might explain why this movie seemed to lack life when the character portrayed Mandira Rizwan and separated. All the warmth that was felt the audience come away from the story.

One thing that is also very memorable when watching My Name is Khan is the fabric of the music that is displayed by the trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. The series of background music that they present seemed able to fill the film very well. In fact, in some scenes, background music that they produce proven to be the main factor of change in emotion when viewers watch My Name is Khan. This is an amazing success!

As a sufferer of Asperger's syndrome, King Khan once again able to successfully demonstrate an essential position in the Bollywood film industry. Kajol is also the reality can still give the same impression as sweet had the audience saw in the previous films. Still the same, but never boring. The combination of both was the one who later became the main life of this film, which makes My Name is Khan is a film that will be able to easily loved by the audience. Although the strength of the script as the story continues to fade when towards the end of the film, due to some over-dramatization, but My Name is Khan is still able to come out as a quality film. Being on Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, but still far below Kabhie Kushi Kabhie Gham, the best achievement of a Karan Johar.

Catwoman 2004

FILM is intended to change the image of Catwoman as Batman enemy. He was not evil, but merely misunderstood. Tim Burton did it in Batman Returns (1992). But this? Well, this one succeeded to four trophies, you know. But the Razzie Awards, the Oscars make bad movies. In the event Razzie Awards 2005, this film took home the title Worst Film, Worst Director, Worst Screenplay and Worst Actress Halle Berry's Catwoman.

Madagascar (2005)

If before this Dreamworks always be remembered with their monumental work of Shrek and Shrek 2, they finally tried to become more varied with new works produced several animated films. Their first experiment was Shark Tale. A film-style comedy mixed with a concoction Dreamworks and Finding Nemo. The result was satisfactory. Although many critics sneer this film, mob crowded (including mine) to enjoy this movie and this movie could reap more than 150 Million U.S. Dollar. Dreamworks second experiment this time was not kidding. When Shark Tale released in Fall 2004 to avoid competition with the holiday season films (read: The Incredibles and The Polar Express), then Madagascar - both films released with confidence noisy welcome Summer 2005.
Madagascar tells the story of four herd that lived at the zoo with cheerful. There is Alex the Lion who was the star of the zoo. Marty the zebra hilarious and nosy, Melman the giraffe who admitted to spending more time than not, and Gloria the hippo last tubby star of the show which is water. It's all live happily side by side without knowing their true nature in the wild. And they did not need to know, are not they all destined to live in zoos and entertain the children until the end of their life? It should still be, if not a Marty who want free life in the wild. Marty who then decided the streets of New York City was being chased by three friends. Alas for them, without realizing they've created extraordinary chaos in the city, and the animal activist decided to strike - send them on life in the wild.
Instead Africans were shipped in their original destination, they ship off the mark thanks to penguin-penguin psychopaths take over the ship. Four stranded in Madagascar even this herd, and began to study the nature of their food chain. Can their friendship to stay awake? Or will Alex be a predator for other friends?
Formula offered by Dreamworks still the same for Madagascar. Mixed humor that can be enjoyed by adults and children, then the allusions satire on the social life of society, and of course herbs terampuhnya; big names as filling his voice. When Will Smith, Angelina Jolie, Jack Black was called to Shark Tale, the quartet is completed by an animal which Ben Stiller in Meet The Fockers success, Chris Rock the comedian famous, David Schwimmer from Friends, and Jada Pinkett Smith - aka Mrs. Will Smith! Not the names at random of course. And once again this composition mixed with a fitting by Dreamworks.
Indeed, this movie can not be secerdik Shrek in terms of humor and story, but Madagascar is not less than Shark Tale. If the theme is carried Shrek and Shark Tale is almost similar ie 'accept yourself' and 'love'. In Madagascar, packed the new theme of 'friendship sejat' and 'social class in society'. How Alex and Marty are both sacrificed for the sake of his friend certainly a valuable teaching for children. For terms of lightness Dreamworks did not forget to insert a lot of interesting characters; of binarang quartet that, of course Melmanlah which has the greatest charm. He is so Ross! Then the penguins psychopath will attract a lot of people laugh. While Mort the Lemurs with large eyes and round it would make any woman scream "Cute ...".
Instead of Madagascar without shortages, changes in a cheerful tone to a dark story by the middle of the story rather obvious to the children, for example, is when the song "What A Wondeful World" which was in contrast to what was depicted on screen. Then the lack of musical tunes in addition to the song "You Gotta Move It" quite disturbing. Is not Shrek and Shark Tale is also remembered for his song-song ngebeat that turn the story throughout the film? Recent weakness in this film is the lack of climax in this film. This new film was to reach the mid-climax before I know everything is finished - the emotions the audience has not reached its peak flavor. Rather unfortunate, because if this film can be drawn about 15-30 minutes longer necessarily more satisfying.
In the end, Madagascar still fun to watch. For those who brought the sister or their children, make sure to be on their side to continue to provide an explanation of the existing storyline. You Gotta Move It!

A Nightmare On Elm Street (2010)

Freddy Krueger is back! After the last time was filmed by director Ronny Yu's Freddy vs. pass. Jason in 2003, now Michael Bay with its production company, Platinum Dunes, re-filmed one of the most popular horror characters in Hollywood was with the intention of doing a reboot of the franchise A Nightmare on Elm Street was first released in 1984 by director Wes Craven sebvagai.
Choosing Samuel Bayer, formerly better known as a music video director, to sit in a chair director, the latest version of A Nightmare on Elm Street is doing a pretty big step to replace the cast of characters Freddy Krueger. The position normally played by Robert Englund since 1984, has finally replaced by Academy Award-winning actor, Jackie Earl Haley. To script the story, the story earlier draft of this film done by Wesley Strick (Doom, The Glass House) before finally revised by Eric Heisserer.
Still using the same formula as it has implemented an early version of this movie, A Nightmare on Elm Street opened with scenes of Dean Russell (Kellan Lutz), who experienced many horrific dreams about a man who wanted to kill him and made him have not slept in several days. Of course, like any other normal person, her boyfriend, Kris Fowles (Katie Cassidy), said that it was simply a flower bed that does not mean anything. But in reality, few minutes later, when Dean was asleep, he was killed in a way, that for others, looks like he slit his own throat.
This, of course, provide its own trauma for Kris. When the funeral of Dean, Kris saw a picture of himself with Dean when childhood, a thing for Kris feels very strange because he was not familiar with Dean in his childhood. When she started being haunted by the same dream as experienced by Dean, Kris later was accompanied by her former lover, Jesse Braun (Thomas Dekker). Unfortunately, it did not prevent Kris to be killed in his dream.
Being at the scene, of course, that the murder suspect Jesse Kris. Before he was finally arrested by the police, he fled to the house Nancy Holbrook (Rooney Mara), who once said that he understands what dreams mean Dean. There, Jesse revealed that he had also been encountered by the same man in his dream, who called himself Freddy (Jackie Earle Haley). Nancy, who has long had the dream, with his friend, Quentin Smith (Kyle Gallner), must try to solve the mystery of who the man is in the dream and why they were targeted for assassination.
Long before the reboot of the A Nightmare on Elm Street, the home production of Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes also has melaukan the same thing to several other horror franchises such as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Amytiville Horror and Friday the 13th, most of whom get a lot of sharp criticism from film critic world. A Nightmare on Elm Street will likely have the fate of quality that is not far different from those films.
Given this is a reboot version, where the story of this film will start from the beginning, then A Nightmare on Elm Street also seemed to want little to focus on the character of Freddy Krueger, and things that cause became a cold-blooded killer. Views Jackie Earle Haley, who is covered by many layers of makeup bvanyak, as Freddy, admittedly darker than what has been previously shown by Robert Englund. Even so, because overall the film does not only focus on the characters themselves, the ability to bring Haley in Freddy character seems to be not too can feel the changes.
From the side of the story script, this movie does not seem to change much. Looks like A Nightmare on Elm Street itself has its own market share, which already knows what they'll get when watching this movie. For those who just want to watch a bunch of sadistic young men die in turns, with no concern other side of the story, A Nightmare on Elm Street is promising. But for others it will consider the formula of this movie is very missed and not so feasible anymore to be reappointed at this time.
If you want to find more credit for this film, visual display A Nightmare on Elm Street along the film can be given a special assessment. Provide dark shades and seem more mysterious, some scenes were quite managed to give the impression of creepy. Coupled with the layout of the music of Steve Jablonsky fairly well, some scenes become more effective for the audience.
No offers nothing new for audiences other than, perhaps, come up with a more elegant visualization of the previous films, A Nightmare on Elm Street will not be able to do much for those who expect any new changes and a separate horror for this franchise. Fortunately, the ranks of actor the film does not perform very badly in the acting character. For those who just want to listen to a minor horror story without regard to other quality factors, A Nightmare on Elm Street might still be working fine. Nothing more.

PREDATORS (2010)

It took about 20 years to re-turn on the Predator is arguably is one of the characters in the film's most famous. Predators itself is a continuation of the Predator (1987), starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Predator 2 (1990). Before starting the action in this latest film, Predator had also matched with the Alien in Alien vs. Predator which I think is very disappointing. Robert Rodriguez is acting as producer seems to be interested to continue this franchise. Sitting on the bench director is producing director Kontroll, Vacancy and Armored, Nimrod Antal, while his cast ranks pretty promising because the presence of Adrien Brody and Topher Grace.

The movie opens with great promise when eight people who did not know each other skydiving from a plane and landed in a forest that was completely foreign to them. The eight men were: Royce (Adrien Brody), a professional mercenary, Isabelle (Alice Braga), a sniper who had just returned from Israel, Edwin (Topher Grace), a doctor, Nikolai (Oleg Taktarov), Russian army, Hanzo (Louis Ozawa Changchien), Yazuka a quiet, Stans (Walton Goggins), FBI fugitive convict, Mombasa (Mahershalalhashbaz Ali), a former militant RUF from Sierra Leone and Chucillo (Danny Trejo), a member of Mexico's drug cartels. They then realized that the forests are located far from the earth, it just means now they are on another planet. In an effort to escape the seemingly endless forests, they must face a brutal and predatory creatures without compassion.

I was initially quite dubious of this film, especially when I remember how bad the quality of the Alien vs. Predator. Even I personally have not witnessed two prekuelnya, only ever seen it briefly on a television screen. But the Predators were beyond my expectations, this film is so gripping, exciting and full of twist. Its opening scene alone is promising and this continues until the end of the movie. The plot is so fast that not seem boring. Viewers were treated to a variety of exciting action scenes and stories that are not easily guessed. Really exciting. The script itself is actually indifferent and more we encounter in class B action movie, but screenwriters team consisting of Michael Finch and Alex Litvak successfully mixes it so well that Predators look a little classy. Display its special effects were awesome. To be sure, Predators fans will not be disappointed by it because the view remain faithful as the original Predator.
Salute to Adrien Brody who appear to be different here. Brody who usually looks calm turned into a brutal, even his physical appearance was arguably changed drastically. Viewers are initially unsure of the placement Brody as the main character will be surprised. Not unexpectedly he can play well in the action genre. Royce described as a tough character, brutal and selfish tend smoothly played by Brody. Similarly, Topher Grace who plays doctor with a mysterious past. Occasionally look cute, but at other times to be suspicious at once sucks. Rows of cast others did not show an outstanding performance, casual.
As a film, Predators can be quite successful because it manages to present an entertaining spectacle. In this film the audience will be brought in a gripping adventure, fun and full of surprises. Maybe for the audience who does not like action movies Predators will feel boring and annoying, but this movie is like a paradise for lovers of action films and thrillers.

Saw 3D (2010)

Saw 3D promoted as the Final Chapter in the series, picks up where Saw VI left off, with Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) having survived the trap he was put in by Jill (Betsy Russell), albeit with some newfound facial issues. And as you might imagine, Hoffman is none too happy with Jill and has plans for her.Meanwhile, a man named Bobby (Sean Patrick Flanery) has become famous thanks to surviving one of Jigsaw’s traps, writing a book and going on a shameless self-promotion tour, guided by his media savvy team. This makes Jigsaw none too happy, and soon Bobby finds himself within a new Jigsaw trap, where he must fight for the survival of both himself and those closest to him.

You may notice that I haven’t mentioned Dr. Gordon yet – even though one of the most eagerly anticipated aspects of this film is the return of the main character from the original Saw, played by Cary Elwes. Well, that’s where this film’s problems begin. Elwes, you see, is barely in Saw 3D. He’s in a couple of early scenes (including the crowd-pleasing opening that shows Gordon in the immediate aftermath of the first film), but then he completely disappears from the movie. It seems inevitable that he’ll eventually return by the end, but he certainly has no impact on the story for the abundance of the running time.

Also baffling is how little Jigsaw, the real Jigsaw that is, appears in this film. Yes, John Kramer died in Saw III, but up until now, he’s still had a decent amount of screen time in each sequel, via flashbacks and videos he left behind. This time out, Tobin Bell pretty much has a cameo, so little is he in this movie. In fact, I’m hard pressed to think of a film where the actor with top billing has as little screen time as Bell has here.As a fan of the series, it was impossible not to be bothered by how little time was spent with either Jigsaw or Gordon, the characters that mean the most to the series at this point. And unfortunately, what we do spend time with doesn’t have much impact. Like Saw III and Saw VI, the main scenario here once again involves a man walking room to room, encountering different people he could potentially save. Having just had a sequel cover this ground again (and do it very well – I found Saw VI to be one of the stronger installments in the series), seeing Bobby go through this type of thing again feels tired at this point.

On top of that, an early sequence, in which Jigsaw has one of his traps conducted in full view of the public, seems to raise the stakes on what Jigsaw is doing. While the scene itself — involving three participants and three buzzsaws — feels somewhat goofy, the idea of the traps being out in the open, on public display, is an edgy next step the movie then immediately retreats from. How are the traps this time out? Decent, but again, a step down from Saw VI. One, involving having to physically pull a key from a very difficult place, is pretty effective. Another, involving crossing an area where the floor is almost completely gone, adds a nice bit of adventure to the vibe (and gave me flashbacks to Flanery’s days as Indiana Jones). But at the same time, there’s nothing truly memorable in the way Saw III’s rack or Saw VI’s carousal were. One exception: The best trap here is probably the one involving a car and a neat/twisted domino effect caused when it falls from a jack. By the way, I know this is nothing new in this series, but watching Saw 3D, I kept thinking how Jigsaw must have both the brilliance and bank account of Tony Stark, considering how elaborate, specific and complicated these traps are. The 3D is used as you might expect it to be – which is to say, this is no James Cameron immersive experience. Instead, blades jut out of the screen, and there is some fun had with blood and guts literally shooting forward at several points. As always, Saw is a very visceral experience.

The cast is serviceable. Flanery has his moments as Bobby, who is hiding a secret of his own, while Elwes, in his few moments on screen, chews the scenery a bit. Costas Mandylor has always been a bit of an odd choice as the man who Jigsaw would pick as his successor, coming off more like a hulking henchman than a criminal mastermind – and the fact that here, it Is Hoffman leaving the videos almost the whole time, and not John, only underscores this, as Mandylor doesn’t have the delivery to sell the thoughtful, “You will learn from this,” tone that Tobin Bell brings. Also of note is Chad Donella, giving an amusingly bad performance as IA agent Gibson, who at one point yells at Jill that she’s a crazy, crazy person who is being crazy.A note about Jill: Saw VI seemed to end with her laying down the gauntlet and rising as a formidable presence of her own, prepared to fight for John’s legacy. That being the case, it’s sad to see her reduced to a running, screaming victim here, who doesn’t seem prepared to face Hoffman at all.

I’m writing a lot of negatives here, so I should say that Saw 3D has its moments, and offers the basics fans of the series enjoy. And it is at least better than the low-point of the series, Saw V. But if this is the last film (though, no shocker, there is a door left open for another installment, should they ever decide to do it), it’s a very weak way to go.Saw V aside, screenwriters Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan have done much better work on this series than what they deliver here. And director Kevin Greutert brought a lot more energy and style to Saw VI than he shows in this film. Although maybe that’s to be expected, given Greutert was pretty much forced to direct Saw 3D, while he was in the midst of planning to do a different film, and wrote that the experience was giving him nightmares involving, “the World Trade Center collapsing in slow motion, plane crashes, drownings, other bad staf. A situation like that is not normally conducive to very good filmmaking
